A Level Physics Tutoring for Stronger Problem Solving

The full course, including fields, thermal physics, nuclear physics and further mechanics. Written answers carry more marks than most students expect.

By the second year of A Level Physics, the individual topics are rarely the obstacle. The obstacle is a question that combines fields with energy, or thermal physics with a graph, and expects the student to decide how the parts fit together.

The papers also ask for a great deal of written physics. Marks are attached to explanations, to comparisons, and to comments on whether a result or a method is reasonable.

Teaching is aimed at both: a connected picture of the course, and the discipline to write an answer that a marker can follow.

A Level Physics Is More Than Calculations

A calculation shows that a student can operate a relationship. An explanation shows whether they understand it, which is why the longer questions carry so many words.

Students practise saying what a quantity means physically, why one arrangement gives a larger value than another, and what assumption a model depends on. Fields, capacitance, thermal physics and nuclear physics are all taught with that emphasis, because each has a definition that must be used precisely rather than paraphrased.

Data and graph work is treated the same way. A gradient is not a number to be reported; it is a physical quantity whose units and meaning should be stated.

  • Definitions used precisely, in the wording a mark scheme can accept
  • Comparisons and proportional reasoning without unnecessary calculation
  • Graphs linearised deliberately, so the gradient means something
  • Practical questions answered in terms of what limits the measurement
  • Connections made across units rather than revision topic by topic

Building Exam-Level Problem Solving

The same sequence is used on every extended question, so unfamiliar contexts stop being a reason to freeze. Students working towards the full qualification often revisit the AS material alongside it, since fields and further mechanics depend directly on it.

Concept
Identify the physics in play, and the system it applies to.
Representation
Draw the field, the circuit, the forces or the graph.
Equation
Select the relationship whose conditions the question satisfies.
Solution
Work symbolically, then substitute, keeping units throughout.
Evaluation
Judge whether the answer, its size and its sign make physical sense.
